Tuesday Fun - Batik Painting

After passing on 3 taxi's ridiculous quotes to drive us to the Craft Complex we decided to walk. Only to find a lovely driver two blocks away who took us for $3, gotta love Asian prices! I have read several blogs of other families traveling with kids and particularly like ourtravellifestyle.com - an Australian family with a 7 and 4 year old, who are now living in Malaysia and have done lots of things here and in other Southeast Asian countries. Before we left Sydney Makoa and I read this post of the kids batik painting and we went and tried it ourselves today.

The complex is quite large and we were lucky that it was quite empty. There were two places where you could paint your own artwork, I chose the smaller of the two allowing us to paint by ourselves with just the artist there to show us how. Makoa and I started by choosing the artwork we wanted and then I traced the designs to the silk. The artist then copied my lines with hot wax and when it dried we painted. It is kind of like painting with watercolors. You could add water to the silk and then add color and watch the colors run and fade, or you could make quite dark colors by just using the paint. No matter what you did though, the wax held the color between the lines so we could do no wrong!

Tasi did her own masterpiece as well.
And after she was finished the artist helped it by using water to make the paint reach the edges.
Makoa and I stayed for an hour while Makoa "learned to be an artist" and created a beautiful hornbill.
I am so glad that Gramma Lolo and Papa gave this to us for Christmas! Makoa and I especially loved it, and Tasi had fun too! Now we have 3 batiks to hang on the wall, or window to allow the light to shine through. Thank you!

As we walked out to leave Makoa saw this huge 'stage' and declared that he "just had to dance" so Don and I were treated to a show!
On our walk toward the Pavilion we saw the Petronas Towers, not ever far from where we are. Makoa even spotted them outside our window lit up at night.

Crazy traffic at 5:05pm. Luckily we were headed to the pedestrian walkway you can see above the street.
We stopped at the Mexican Cantina for dinner and after the waitress described in detail what chips and salsa meant, as opposed to nachos :) we ordered enchiladas that the chef made vegetarian special for us!
Yep those are carrots and broccoli and cauliflower! Amazingly, it was better than the Mexican food in Australia!!

Outside to check on the bears again and Makoa found his favorite bear with his best and favorite colors, red and orange and yellow. And Makoa took a photo of me posing with the Peruvian bear, just for you Annie!!

 Budget:
Accommodation - $78
Food - $37
